In the late 1920s, nearly 400 years since the death of Abbot John Islip who built this chantry chapel in the north ambulatory, traces of two monochrome paintings of St Peter and St Edward the Confessor were found either side of the altar in the upper chapel. They stand on large corbels beneath elaborate canopies and are about ten feet (three metres thirty cms.) tall. The paintings in this chapel were executed by Master Humphrey in 1530 but the central Crucifix and figure of Christ standing on a rainbow have not survived. The scheme of paintings in the upper and lower chapels can be seen in one of the drawings in the mortuary roll of Abbot Islip, 1532, on display in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries.
Before the scrubdown, protect nearby plants by misting their leaves and saturating the surrounding soil with water, pulling them away from the house, and shrouding them in fabric drop cloths. (Plants will cook under plastic.) Lay more drop cloths along the base of the walls to collect any falling paint debris. Walls should be wet down before getting scrubbed, then washed with a gallon of water mixed with 1 cup chlorine bleach and 1 cup of either a concentrated, phosphate-free cleaner, such as a trisodium phosphate (TSP) substitute, or Jomax House Cleaner. Working in sections, from the bottom to the top, will avoid streaks. Be sure to rinse walls well before the solution dries. I found a great YouTube video channel on how to paint a house. It covered interior and exterior painting, and the videos were easy to follow. I watched a few other painters’ videos as well, because even the professionals do not all paint in the same way.

As for actually using the sprayer, the main thing to remember is to not overcoat with paint. Two or three quick passes will minimize drippage as opposed to trying to get a full coat on all at once. (Which I learned the hard way. The first room I painted was so drippy droppy, we had to do some extra sanding once it dried. I felt so bad!) Only by actually using the sprayer will you get a method down. By the time I was done with the sprayer, I felt like a pro and actually had fun painting!
